New Survey Shows Oral Health Is Top Confidence Booster

This past winter when Delta Dental published its annual Adult’s Oral Health & Well-Being Survey, it shed some light on American adults’ opinions on oral health - and how the condition of their smile impacts other areas of their lives. The survey asked 1,008 American adults for their impressions on many different facets of their oral health and oral care routine. Here are some of the most interesting answers:

"What makes you feel confident?"

A surprising 67 percent of respondents said that having good oral health makes them feel more confident than having clear skin or being in good physical shape. Having a beautiful smile also made the list of confidence boosters.

"What’s important to you?"

When asked this question, 85 percent of respondents said their oral health was most important - more so than their friendships, their diet and their weight!

"No. 1 reason for unplanned dentist visit?"

The No. 1 reason respondents cited an unplanned dentist visit was unspecified pain in their mouth. This was more common than chipped or cracked teeth, cavities, bleeding gums or to replace a crown or filling.

"How does a smile affect your first impression?"

According to the survey, 72 percent of people said a person’s smile is the first thing they remember when meeting for the first time. That means whether you’re interviewing for a job or entering the dating world, a smile makes a huge impact - all the more reason to keep your teeth and gums in great health.

"How does oral health affect other areas of your life?"

Believe it or not, respondents who said they have excellent oral health answered that their overall quality of live was better, too. The relationships, careers and finances of those who have excellent oral hygiene were rated higher than those who admitted to having less-than-perfect oral health.

"Which of the following types of health practitioners do you not see as often as you would like?"

When asked this question, the most common answer among both male (42 percent) and female (45 percent) respondents was dentist, beating out everyone from allergists to ophthalmologists. So, what does this mean? Well, it means nearly half of us aren’t going to the dentist as often as we should. But thankfully there’s an easy fix for that!
