Encourage Oral Care in Kids with these Books about Brushing!

If you have kids, you probably already know that sometimes even the easiest and mundane of daily responsibilities can be a battle. Picking up one’s dirty socks off the floor can go over as well as being asked to deep clean the entire carpet, and asking them to wash their hands before dinner might as well be asking them to wash their hands in a big bucket of gooey slime. If getting your kids to brush your teeth is up there on the list of things to do that are often like, well, pulling teeth, check out some of these popular children’s books that show them how fun and important taking care of their teeth can be!

  • The Tooth Book, by Dr. Seuss  The Tooth Book is a classic story about all the different kinds of people and animals who have teeth. First published in 1981, this Dr. Seuss classic has been a favorite for generations, and may have even been a favorite of yours, too. Your kids will delight in the silly photos of animal teeth and the funny rhyming names of all the characters with their distinctive teeth.

  • The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan and Jan Berenstain Another classic, the Berenstain Bears books never fail to impart an important lesson while entertaining your children with a kind, gentle story. This story teaches children about exactly what to expect at their first visit to the dentist. From the tools the dentist uses to the different types of procedures your child can expect, Stan and Jan Berenstain calmly teach readers that there’s no reason to fear the dentist.

  • Peppa Pig Dentist Trip, Based on Peppa Pig by Neville Astley and Mark Baker  A relatively new phenomenon around the globe, Peppa Pig is very popular among the toddler and preschool set. In this story, Peppa Pig must go to the dentist. Though she is apprehensive at first, she soon discovers that visiting the dentist is nothing to be afraid of. Though the story itself isn’t very long, it succeeds at presenting its message. Best of all, it comes with cool Peppa Pig stickers, which may come in handy following a successful trip to the dentist!

  • Brush, Brush Brush, by Alicia Padron A great book for a baby or toddler to introduce them to the act of brushing their teeth. The book can be rhymed or sung, but creates a familiar cadence that kids can use to easily remember how and why it’s important to brush their teeth.

  • Sugarbug Doug: All About Cavities, Plaque, and Teeth by Dr. Ben Magleby Written by a practicing (and former Naval) dentist, Sugarbug Doug teaches children about the importance of brushing their teeth, and the many things that can happen if they don’t. Sugarbug Doug is geared towards older kids who are able to brush their own teeth, and who might enjoy some fascinating scientific information about how and why we brush our teeth. Even adults can learn a thing or two from Sugarbug Doug!

These books are a great start towards introducing kids to proper oral hygiene. If getting your child to care for his or her teeth is still a struggle, speak to Dr. Simpson about other books or tips to make brushing a little bit more exciting. Dr. Simpson can be reached at 910-550-3959.
